DUMINGAG, ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR — Authorities seized approximately 25 metric tons of copper ore with an estimated market value of ₱750,000 during an intelligence-driven operation targeting the illegal transport of mineral resources in Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur.
The operation was conducted by personnel of the 902nd Maneuver Company, Regional Mobile Force Battalion 9 (902nd MC, RMFB 9) as the lead unit, in coordination with the Zamboanga del Sur Police Intelligence Unit (ZSPIU), Dumingag Municipal Police Station (MPS), and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Region IX (MGB IX).
According to the accomplishment report, the operation was carried out at the 902nd MC Forward Operating Base along the National Highway in Purok 1, Barangay Caridad, Dumingag following intelligence information concerning the movement of mineral ore.
During the operation, authorities intercepted one Sinotruk cargo truck reportedly being used to transport the mineral ore.
A subsequent inspection resulted in the discovery of approximately 500 sacks of copper ore, with the total shipment estimated at 25,000 kilograms, or 25 metric tons.
Authorities placed the estimated market value of the intercepted copper ore at ₱750,000.
The seizure represents another enforcement action against the unauthorized movement of mineral resources, particularly in areas where the transport and extraction of mineral ores are subject to government regulation.
The operation also involved the participation of MGB IX, the government agency responsible for regulating and monitoring the country’s mineral resources in the region. Its involvement is expected to ensure that the confiscated mineral ore is properly assessed and handled in accordance with existing mining laws and regulations.
Following the interception, the confiscated copper ore was placed under the custody of authorities pending its proper turnover to MGB IX in Pagadian City for appropriate disposition.
Authorities did not immediately provide details regarding the identity of the truck’s driver, the source of the copper ore, its intended destination, or whether any individual had been arrested or charged in connection with the shipment.
The circumstances surrounding the transport, including whether the shipment had the required permits and documents, remain subject to verification by the concerned authorities.
The latest operation highlights continued government efforts to curb the illegal extraction, transportation, and movement of mineral resources, which can result in environmental damage and deprive the government of revenues from legally regulated mining activities.
Further action will depend on the findings of the MGB IX and other investigating authorities following the turnover and examination of the seized mineral ore and the documents associated with its transport.
