General Santos City — A cinematic revolution is blooming in SOCCSKSARGEN (SOX) as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 12 launches its first-ever SineKalikasan: Youth Film Festival, a groundbreaking initiative that gives the region’s young storytellers a powerful platform to champion the environment through the lens of film.

In celebration of Youth ASEAN Month this August, six compelling short films from high school students across the region will premiere on August 8, 2025, in what is shaping up to be a festival of raw creativity, emotional storytelling, and ecological awakening.

Each film is a testament to the growing environmental consciousness among the youth—fusing local narratives with universal truths about climate change, environmental degradation, and the power of community action. These stories go beyond mere entertainment; they provoke reflection, stir emotions, and demand accountability.

The Selected Entries: Stories Rooted in Conscience and Creativity

1. “Binhi” – Tulunan National High School
A mythic tale that blends fantasy and philosophy, Binhi introduces the Immortals—celestial beings who descend into the world as students. As they observe the human world, they uncover a vital truth: lasting environmental change begins not in power, but in personal responsibility. The film plants a symbolic seed—binhi—of hope, urging viewers to nurture small acts of care into lasting legacies of sustainability.

2. “Hagit” – Kidapawan City National High School
Hagit follows a young woman torn by the deafening silence of environmental collapse and her inner fears of taking action. The film explores the internal conflict of knowing versus doing, illustrating how the fiercest battles for the planet often begin within ourselves. Visually poetic and emotionally resonant, Hagit is a call for introspection and brave choices.

3. “Diwang Di-Pipi” – Libertad National High School
Without uttering a single word, the protagonist of Diwang Di-Pipi speaks volumes through his devotion to the Earth. The film is a moving metaphor about how love for nature transcends physical limitations. In a noisy world of rhetoric, this documentary finds its strength in quiet action and silent perseverance.

4. “Ina” – New Society National High School
A somber environmental allegory, Ina portrays Mother Earth as a nurturing figure suffering from humanity’s negligence. Her body—once vibrant and fertile—is now scarred by pollution, deforestation, and indifference. Despite the pain, she continues to love and hope. The film is a lyrical cry for ecological empathy and urgent change.

5. “Luhang Luntian” – Sto. Niño National High School
Set against a backdrop of grief and environmental destruction, Luhang Luntian is a tale of young creators who transform personal tragedy into a mission for justice. When they lose a friend to a flash flood caused by illegal logging, they use their cameras to expose the truth. Their documentary becomes an act of defiance, mourning, and purpose—amplifying the Earth’s cry for help.

6. “Sulyap ng Liwanag” – Baluan National High School
The festival’s closing film, Sulyap ng Liwanag, is a gentle yet powerful call to arms. Told through the voice of the youth, it acknowledges the despair of climate crises but offers light through solidarity and courage. It declares that the future is not far-off—it is now, and it rests in the hands of a generation ready to rise.

Cinema as Environmental Awakening

More than just a film competition, SineKalikasan 2025 is a movement. It invites the public to watch, reflect, and react—not merely as spectators but as co-authors of change. As the region confronts increasing environmental threats, these films serve as cultural artifacts of youth resistance, resilience, and reimagination.

DENR-12’s bold initiative reaffirms the truth that storytelling can be a tool for transformation, especially when wielded by the youth. Through their films, they reveal the wounds of the planet, but more importantly, they offer the healing power of hope, creativity, and community.
