MATALAM, COTABATO — A 39-year-old farmer was killed while two others were injured after they were ambushed by an unidentified gunman on Saturday afternoon, November 29, in Purok 10, Barangay Kibia.
The fatality was identified as Renato Arivalo Labagnao, also known as “Rey” and “Pato”, married, and a resident of Purok 3 in the same barangay. Labagnao sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene.
Injured were Anthony Supleo, 22, who was rushed to Mindanao Doctors Hospital due to multiple gunshot wounds, and Conrado Cabaya, 43, who managed to flee but still suffered a non-fatal injury.
Initial information from relatives revealed that the three men had just come from a cockfighting arena and were riding home together on a motorcycle when a gunman suddenly approached and opened fire. The attack happened at around 2:38 p.m. while the victims were passing through a residential area.
Police investigators are now conducting pursuit operations to track down the suspect or suspects behind the shooting. The Matalam Municipal Police Station said they are also gathering CCTV footage from nearby establishments and households, as well as searching for potential witnesses who may help identify the assailants.
Authorities have coordinated with barangay officials as the investigation continues. Motive behind the attack remains unclear.
