August 2, 2026 — Residents across Mindanao should remain alert for sudden heavy downpours and thunderstorms today as the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported that Tropical Depression “Luis” continues to move slowly west-southwestward over the Philippine Sea while localized thunderstorms are expected to affect much of the island.
In its Regional Weather Forecast for Mindanao issued at 5:00 a.m. on August 2, PAGASA said the center of Tropical Depression Luis was estimated at 595 kilometers east of Daet, Camarines Norte as of 3:00 a.m. The weather disturbance packs maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour and gusts reaching 70 kilometers per hour while moving slowly toward the west-southwest.
Although the tropical depression remains far from Mindanao, weather forecasters said the island will continue to experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers and thunderstorms primarily caused by localized thunderstorm activity rather than the direct influence of the cyclone. However, PAGASA warned that severe thunderstorms may still trigger flash floods and landslides, particularly in low-lying and mountainous areas.
Winds across Mindanao are expected to remain light to moderate, blowing from the south to southwest, while coastal waters will generally experience slight to moderate seas with wave heights ranging from 0.6 to 1.5 meters, making conditions generally favorable for small fishing vessels and inter-island travel. Nevertheless, mariners are advised to monitor weather advisories as thunderstorms can develop rapidly.
Rainshowers Expected Across All Mindanao Regions
The forecast indicates that nearly all provinces in Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, SOCCSKSARGEN, Caraga Region, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) will experience similar weather conditions throughout the day and into the evening.
In the Zamboanga Peninsula, including Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, and Isabela City, residents can expect intermittent rainshowers and thunderstorms with daytime temperatures ranging between 22°C and 34°C.
Across Northern Mindanao, including Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental, and Misamis Oriental, cloudy periods accompanied by isolated thunderstorms are forecast, with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 33°C.
The Davao Region, covering Metro Davao, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao de Oro, and Davao Occidental, is also expected to experience scattered thunderstorms. The highest daytime temperature in the region may reach 35°C in Davao de Oro, making it one of the warmest areas in Mindanao today despite the expected rainfall.
In SOCCSKSARGEN, including North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani, weather conditions will remain generally fair but unstable, with isolated thunderstorms likely during the afternoon and evening. Temperatures are expected to range between 23°C and 34°C.
Similar conditions are forecast across the Caraga Region, where Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Dinagat Islands could experience sudden thunderstorms capable of producing intense rainfall over short periods. Maximum temperatures may climb to 35°C, particularly in Surigao del Sur.
Meanwhile, residents of BARMM, including Cotabato City, Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi, should also prepare for localized thunderstorms. Daytime temperatures across the region are forecast to range from 21°C to 34°C, with coastal waters remaining slight to moderate.
Super Typhoon “Dolphin” Remains Outside PAR
PAGASA also reported that Super Typhoon “Dolphin” (2613) remains outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) and currently poses no direct threat to the country.
As of 3:00 a.m., the super typhoon was located approximately 3,410 kilometers east of Extreme Northern Luzon with maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour, gusts reaching 230 kilometers per hour, and moving west-northwestward at 25 kilometers per hour.
Public Advised to Stay Vigilant
While no widespread severe weather is expected over Mindanao today, PAGASA urged the public to remain vigilant, especially during afternoon and evening thunderstorms, which can quickly produce heavy rainfall, lightning, strong wind gusts, and localized flooding.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution on roads that are prone to flooding, while residents living near rivers, creeks, and landslide-prone slopes should closely monitor local weather advisories and heed instructions from local disaster management authorities if weather conditions deteriorate.
The regional forecast remains valid from 5:00 a.m. on August 2 until 5:00 a.m. on August 3, 2026, with PAGASA continuing to monitor the movement of Tropical Depression Luis and other weather systems affecting the country.
