MARAMAG, Bukidnon — A suspected “salisi” and car break-in thief was arrested after being caught in the act of stealing from a parked vehicle in Maramag, Bukidnon, authorities said.

The suspect, identified only by the alias “Mark,” 33, was apprehended in Purok 6, Barangay Dologon after police officers allegedly caught him taking a backpack from a parked vehicle during an intelligence monitoring operation.

According to the Bukidnon Police Provincial Office (PPO), operatives from the Maramag Municipal Police Station were conducting intelligence monitoring activities in connection with the celebration of “Araw ng Dologon.” As part of their operation, the officers temporarily left their unmarked vehicle to carry out area documentation.

Upon returning, the operatives reportedly discovered the suspect already holding a backpack belonging to one of the police officers.

The stolen bag contained cash, a pair of shoes, and a Philippine National Police (PNP) identification card. The suspect was immediately arrested at the scene before he could escape.

Authorities said the arrest led to the recovery not only of the stolen belongings but also several items believed to be connected to criminal activities.

Recovered from the suspect were a flat screwdriver believed to have been used in forcibly opening vehicles, several keys, a sling bag, three smartphones, and a .38 caliber revolver loaded with two rounds of ammunition.

Investigators are now looking into whether the suspect may be linked to other reported theft and car break-in incidents in the area, particularly those involving the so-called “bukas-kotse” modus operandi, where thieves target unattended vehicles and steal valuables left inside.

The presence of a firearm during the commission of the alleged crime has also raised concerns among authorities, as the incident could have potentially escalated into a more dangerous situation had the suspect resisted arrest or confronted vehicle owners.

The suspect was brought to the Maramag Municipal Police Station for documentation and the filing of appropriate charges.

Police have yet to determine the ownership and legal status of the recovered firearm and whether the suspect possesses the necessary documents to carry it.

Following the arrest, the Bukidnon PPO renewed its call for vigilance among motorists and the general public, reminding vehicle owners to avoid leaving valuable items inside parked vehicles and to ensure that their cars are properly locked and secured.

Authorities emphasized that theft cases involving unattended vehicles remain a persistent concern, particularly during public events and gatherings where crowds can provide opportunities for criminals to operate unnoticed.

The Bukidnon PPO assured the public that intensified police visibility, intelligence operations, and anti-criminality campaigns will continue to prevent theft-related incidents and ensure public safety across the province.
