OPOL, Misamis Oriental — More than P200,000 worth of suspected illegally sourced mineral ores were confiscated by authorities during a joint anti-illegal mining operation in the municipality of Opol, Misamis Oriental, highlighting the government’s intensified crackdown against unauthorized extraction and processing of mineral resources.

The operation was carried out in Zone 3, Barangay Limonda, where law enforcement personnel discovered a large stockpile of mineral ores inside a processing area believed to be linked to illegal mining activities.
The successful operation involved personnel from the Opol Municipal Police Station, Task Force Kalikasan ug Kalinaw, the Provincial Intelligence Unit (PIU) of the Misamis Oriental Police Provincial Office, and the 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company.
According to authorities, the operating team was conducting monitoring and validation activities when they came across a processing facility with its gate left open. Upon inspection, they found 204 sacks of suspected illegal mineral ores stacked inside the area.
The sacks were immediately secured and confiscated after authorities determined that no individuals were present at the site and that the mineral ores appeared to have been abandoned.
Initial estimates placed the market value of the seized mineral ores at approximately P204,000, making it one of the significant anti-illegal mining recoveries recorded in the municipality this year.
Authorities have yet to identify the owner or operators behind the processing area and the stockpiled mineral ores. Investigators are currently pursuing leads to determine the source of the minerals and establish whether environmental and mining laws were violated.
Illegal mining remains a persistent concern in several parts of the country due to its adverse impact on the environment, including deforestation, soil erosion, water contamination, and the destruction of natural habitats. Government agencies have repeatedly warned that unauthorized extraction of mineral resources not only deprives the state of revenues but also poses serious risks to communities living near mining sites.
Following the operation, the confiscated mineral ores were transported to the Misamis Oriental Provincial Capitol for proper custody and disposition in accordance with existing environmental and mining regulations.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing and vowed to continue strengthening inter-agency operations against illegal mining activities and environmental crimes across the province.
No arrests have been made as of this writing, but law enforcement officials assured the public that efforts are underway to identify and hold accountable those responsible for the suspected illegal mineral processing operation in Barangay Limonda.
