KABACAN, Cotabato — A 36-year-old man is facing a parricide charge after he allegedly stabbed his own mother to death inside their home in Purok Mabuhay, Barangay Kilagasan, Kabacan, Cotabato, in the early hours of June 22, authorities said.
The victim was identified as Floresma Mesmis Mamaril, 59, a widow and resident of the village, who was found lifeless inside the kitchen of their house shortly before dawn.
Police identified the suspect as “Jayf” (also referred to in reports as “Jeff”), a married, unemployed man and the victim’s son. Authorities said he was immediately arrested following the incident and is now under police custody.
According to the initial investigation, Mamaril’s body was discovered at around 4:58 a.m. leaning against a wall inside the kitchen. Responding officers found that she had sustained multiple deep stab wounds and severe injuries to her face, neck, and left arm.
The gruesome nature of the attack shocked residents of the community, with investigators describing the victim as having suffered numerous wounds inflicted by bladed weapons.
Recovered from the crime scene were several items believed to have been used in the killing, including two kitchen knives, a bolo, and an ice pick. Authorities also seized several pieces of suspected drug paraphernalia, including three green lighters and a glass tooter, commonly associated with illegal drug use.
Police said the suspect had been known in the area for allegedly being involved in illegal drug use, although authorities have yet to determine whether narcotics directly played a role in the killing.
Investigators are still working to establish the exact motive behind the fatal attack. As of this writing, police have not released details regarding any argument, altercation, or circumstance that may have led to the deadly incident.
The suspect was brought to the Kabacan Municipal Police Station, where he remains detained while authorities prepare the formal filing of a parricide case, a criminal offense involving the killing of a family member.
Police continue to conduct a thorough investigation to uncover all circumstances surrounding the crime and determine whether other factors contributed to the fatal attack.
Meanwhile, local media organizations opted not to release photographs of the victim out of respect for the deceased and her grieving family.
The brutal killing has left residents of Barangay Kilagasan in shock, as a mother lost her life allegedly at the hands of her own son in what authorities describe as one of the area’s most disturbing domestic crimes in recent months.
