LUPON, Davao Oriental — A 35-year-old woman with a psychosocial disability was allegedly raped and brutally killed inside her own home in Barangay Sto. Rosario, Poblacion, Lupon, with her decomposing body discovered five days after the reported crime, according to initial information surrounding the incident.

The victim, identified by her family as Shiela Mae “MayMay” Mauricio, was reportedly attacked on October 30, 2026. However, her remains were not discovered until November 4, when they were found inside the family residence in an advanced state of decomposition.

Police subsequently launched an operation that resulted in the arrest of a suspect in connection with the woman’s death.

Based on the information provided about the investigation, the suspect allegedly admitted to raping the victim before killing her on October 30. The circumstances of the assault and killing, however, remain subject to police investigation and verification through the appropriate legal process.

The discovery of the victim’s body several days after the alleged crime has intensified calls for justice from relatives and members of the community, particularly given her vulnerability and the reported brutality of the incident.

Family Calls for Justice

A person close to the victim’s family expressed anguish over the killing in a social media post, describing the victim as someone who already had difficulty functioning independently because of her condition.

The post condemned the alleged sexual assault and killing and called for justice to be served as soon as possible.

The family also reportedly disclosed that the victim’s mother and older sibling had previously experienced rape, adding another deeply distressing dimension to the family’s circumstances. These claims have not been independently established and should be treated with caution pending further verification.

Investigation and Accountability

The arrest of the suspect marks an important development in the investigation, but authorities must still establish the complete circumstances surrounding the alleged rape and killing, determine the appropriate criminal charges, and ensure that the case proceeds through the justice system.

The suspect’s reported admission should also be evaluated alongside other evidence gathered by investigators. The filing of formal charges, forensic findings, and the results of the investigation will be crucial in establishing accountability.

The case also raises serious concerns about the protection of women with disabilities, particularly those who may face additional barriers in reporting abuse, seeking assistance, or protecting themselves from violence.

A Community Mourns MayMay

Shiela Mae “MayMay” Mauricio was born on May 6, 1991, and died on November 4, 2026, according to the family’s funeral announcement.

Her remains were brought to Ambit Funeral Homes in Lupon, where relatives, friends, and members of the community were invited to pay their final respects.

Her burial was scheduled for November 7, 2026, at 1 p.m. at the Lupon Cemetery.

As the family prepares to lay her to rest, relatives and loved ones continue to seek justice for a woman whose life was cut short under deeply disturbing circumstances.

Beyond the arrest, the family and the community await a thorough investigation and the prosecution of those responsible, so that the circumstances of MayMay’s death are fully established and justice is pursued through the proper legal process.
