ZAMBOANGA CITY — A family of seven, including five children, narrowly escaped death or serious injury after a large tree toppled onto their house during strong winds and heavy rainfall in Sitio Caragasan, Barangay Maasin, Zamboanga City, on Saturday night, June 13.

The incident occurred at around 8:00 p.m. while the family was already inside their home preparing to sleep. According to initial reports, the area was being battered by intense rain and powerful wind gusts when the tree suddenly gave way and crashed onto the family’s residence.
Residents in the area said the loud impact caused panic among nearby households as the massive tree struck the roof and portions of the house, trapping the occupants momentarily amid the darkness and adverse weather conditions.
Despite the severity of the incident, all seven family members survived. Authorities reported that several members of the family sustained minor scratches and bruises caused by falling branches and debris. No fatalities or life-threatening injuries were recorded.
Emergency responders and local authorities immediately rushed to the scene and assisted the victims. The family was subsequently transported to a medical facility for evaluation and treatment as a precautionary measure.
Barangay Maasin, which is located near a coastal area, is particularly vulnerable to the effects of severe weather conditions, including strong winds and heavy rainfall. The incident highlights the dangers posed by weakened or aging trees during periods of intense weather disturbances.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the condition of the injured family members while conducting an assessment of the structural damage sustained by the house. Initial observations indicate that the residence suffered significant damage after being struck by the fallen tree.
Disaster response officials have also reminded residents to remain vigilant, especially amid the prevailing weather conditions affecting parts of Zamboanga City and neighboring areas. Communities living near large trees, steep slopes, and flood-prone locations have been urged to take precautionary measures and immediately report potential hazards to local authorities.
While the family escaped what could have been a tragic outcome, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the growing risks posed by extreme weather events and the importance of disaster preparedness at the household and community levels.
