ZAMBOANGA CITY — The Naval Command Western Mindanao (NCWM) has strengthened its maritime security capability with the acquisition of a 42-foot speedboat donated by Philip Morris Fortune Corporation, Inc. (PMFCI), adding a faster and more versatile platform to its continuing operations across the waters of Western Mindanao.

The speedboat was formally turned over to the NCWM during a turnover and blessing ceremony held on August 18, 2026, marking another instance of private-sector support for the Philippine Navy’s efforts to enhance maritime security and law enforcement support in the region.

The additional maritime asset is expected to improve the Command’s ability to conduct rapid patrols, surveillance missions, and security operations, particularly in areas where speed and mobility are critical to responding to maritime incidents and monitoring activities at sea.

For naval units operating across Western Mindanao, where extensive coastlines, island communities, busy sea lanes, and remote maritime areas present persistent security and monitoring challenges, additional patrol assets can provide greater operational flexibility.

The speedboat will allow NCWM personnel to respond more quickly to emerging situations and support the Command’s efforts to maintain a sustained maritime presence. It may also enhance the Navy’s capacity to monitor and respond to activities that threaten the safety and security of coastal and maritime communities.

NCWM said the donated vessel will contribute to its continuing efforts to curb illegal activities and maintain order in the waters under its area of responsibility.

The acquisition also highlights the role of cooperation between government institutions and the private sector in strengthening maritime security. While the Philippine Navy remains at the forefront of the country’s maritime defense and security operations, partnerships that provide additional equipment and logistical support can help improve the operational readiness of units deployed in strategically important areas.

During the ceremony, NCWM expressed its appreciation to PMFCI for its support to the Philippine Navy, noting the contribution’s importance to creating a safer and more secure maritime environment.

The donation comes as maritime security remains a continuing concern in Western Mindanao, a region where the sea serves not only as a vital transportation and economic corridor but also as a critical operating environment for security forces.

With the new 42-foot speedboat now added to its available resources, NCWM is expected to have greater mobility in carrying out maritime patrols and surveillance, reinforcing its presence in the waters of Western Mindanao and supporting its broader mandate to protect communities and maintain security at sea.
