ZAMBOANGA SIBUGAY, Philippines — Authorities intensified their crackdown on illegal smuggling activities after a joint maritime law enforcement operation led by the Philippine National Police Maritime Group resulted in the interception of a motorized boat carrying suspected contraband cigarettes off the waters of Tungawan on April 29, 2026.

The operation was launched following actionable intelligence regarding the alleged transport of smuggled goods in the area. Acting swiftly on the tip, operatives, in coordination with other government agencies, conducted a sea patrol that led to the apprehension of the vessel and its occupants.

Upon inspection, authorities discovered multiple boxes of suspected smuggled cigarettes on board. The individuals aboard the motorized boat failed to present the necessary documents to prove the legality of the cargo, prompting their immediate arrest. Law enforcement officers informed the suspects of their constitutional rights at the time of apprehension.

Seized during the operation were 12 master cases or approximately 600 reams of cigarettes believed to be smuggled, along with the motorized boat and its two engines. The total estimated value of the confiscated items reached ₱912,600.

The arrested individuals, along with the recovered evidence, were brought to the Zamboanga Sibugay Maritime Police Station for proper inventory and documentation. Authorities confirmed that the case will be referred to the Department of Trade and Industry for appropriate disposition, while the National Tobacco Administration will conduct an official examination of the seized tobacco products.

The Philippine National Police reiterated its firm stance against smuggling and other illicit activities, emphasizing that such operations are part of its intensified enforcement efforts under the Enhanced Managing Police Operations (EMPO) framework. The strategy highlights intelligence-driven policing, evidence-based approaches, and strict accountability in law enforcement.

Authorities also renewed their call for public cooperation, urging citizens to report suspicious activities to help maintain peace, order, and economic security, particularly in coastal and maritime communities vulnerable to smuggling operations.
