Zamboanga Sibugay, January 20, 2025—In a decisive operation, authorities intercepted a vehicle carrying smuggled goods during a 24-hour joint COMELEC checkpoint. The checkpoint was led by the ZSB 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company (PMFC) along a route heading towards Ipil.

A black Mitsubishi Montero subjected to a routine inspection suddenly sped through the checkpoint without any apparent reason, prompting authorities to issue an alert to adjacent COMELEC checkpoints and friendly forces. A dragnet operation was immediately launched to intercept the fleeing vehicle.

The pursuit ended in Sirawai, Zamboanga del Norte, where the combined efforts of the ZSB 2nd PMFC, Tungawan Municipal Police Station (MPS), 106th Infantry Battalion, Bravo Company, Philippine Army, and Sirawai MPS successfully intercepted the vehicle.

Upon inspection, authorities discovered 30 cases of smuggled New Berlin cigarettes hidden within the vehicle. According to the Bureau of Customs standard pricing, the confiscated goods were valued at Php1,719,000.00. The driver and the alleged owner of the smuggled items failed to present any documentation for the goods. The cigarettes were confiscated under the plain view doctrine and through a lawful search incidental to arrest.

The suspects are currently detained at the Tungawan Municipal Police Station, facing charges for violating the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.
