Tungawan, Zamboanga Sibugay – February 10, 2025
Personnel of the Tungawan Municipal Police Station (MPS), in coordination with Mr. Noel Salazar, Election Officer of Tungawan municipality, successfully intercepted a smuggling attempt during a COMELEC checkpoint operation at Purok Duncaan, Libertad, Tungawan.
At approximately 6:30 AM, authorities flagged down a Yamaha AEROX 155 motorcycle, orange and black in color, bearing temporary plate number 0912-065547. The motorcycle, driven by a resident of Barangay Libertad and traveling from Barangay Taglibas, was found carrying two brown boxes of assorted cigarettes at the back.
Upon closer inspection, checkpoint personnel requested the driver to present legal documents for the items. When the driver failed to provide any supporting documents, authorities invoked the plain view doctrine and an incidental search to a lawful arrest, leading to the confiscation of 100 reams of assorted smuggled cigarettes. Based on the Bureau of Customs’ standard pricing, the seized goods have an estimated value of Php114,600.00.
The inventory of the confiscated cigarettes was conducted in the presence of elected Barangay Officials of Barangay Tigbanuang, Tungawan. The arrested individual and the seized contraband were subsequently brought to Tungawan MPS for proper disposition and further investigation.
PCOL Barnard Danie V. Dasugo, Provincial Director, underscored the significance of the ongoing checkpoint operations in ensuring law enforcement and public safety during the election period. “Our robust COMELEC Checkpoints not only ensure the security of the Election Period but also disrupt any illegal activities that might threaten the peace and order of the Province. We will continue to strengthen our border control. Together, we can make a significant impact in the fight against illegal smuggling and ensure the safety and security of our Province,” he stated.
Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that may involve smuggling or other illegal activities. The police force remains committed to upholding the law and maintaining order throughout the election period and beyond.
