ROSARIO, Agusan del Sur — A 39-year-old miner was killed after being stabbed by his co-worker inside a mining tunnel in Purok 1, Barangay Wasian on the evening of April 19, 2026, authorities confirmed.

The victim, identified only by his alias “Dodong,” was a resident of the same barangay where the fatal incident occurred.

According to an initial investigation by the Rosario Municipal Police Station, the victim and the suspect were drinking together inside a mining tunnel prior to the incident. Police said the suspect briefly left the area, but upon returning, suddenly attacked the victim and stabbed him in the chest.

The single, fatal blow caused severe injuries that led to the victim’s immediate death at the scene.

Following the attack, the suspect fled the mining site in an apparent attempt to evade arrest. However, authorities later confirmed that he voluntarily surrendered to law enforcement, a move that led to his immediate detention.

The suspect is now under police custody as investigators finalize the documentation and evidence needed for the filing of a murder case against him.

Police continue to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the full circumstances and possible motive behind the killing, including whether alcohol consumption played a significant role in triggering the violence.

Authorities assured the public that justice will be pursued and that appropriate legal action will be taken against the suspect in connection with the fatal stabbing.

The incident underscores ongoing safety and security concerns in remote mining areas, where disputes can escalate rapidly, particularly under the influence of alcohol.
