LUUK, Sulu — March 18, 2026 — Sustained community engagement and strengthened collaboration among security forces, local government units, and grassroots leaders have led to the voluntary surrender of a high-powered firearm in this municipality, marking another step toward building a gun-free and peace-centered community.

Authorities confirmed that one Caliber .30 M1 Garand rifle was voluntarily turned over on March 17, 2026, in Luuk. The surrender was facilitated through coordinated efforts between military and police units, alongside local leadership.

Lt. Col. Dante E. Mantes, Commanding Officer of the 101st Infantry Battalion, reported that the firearm was handed over to his unit in coordination with Police Captain Jennifer E. Buco, Chief of Police of the Luuk Municipal Police Station. The turnover was made possible through the initiative of Barangay Chairperson Hon. Rudzna W. Sabbarani of Tubig Putih, whose role proved instrumental in bridging communication between authorities and the community.

Military officials highlighted that the voluntary surrender reflects growing public trust and cooperation, key elements in advancing government-led peace and security programs in Sulu.

Lt. Col. Mantes emphasized that the development demonstrates the effectiveness of sustained community engagement, trust-building efforts, and close coordination with local leaders. He noted that such initiatives continue to encourage voluntary compliance among residents and contribute to long-term stability in the area.

Brig. Gen. Alaric Avelino P. Delos Santos, Commander of the 1102nd Infantry Brigade, said the surrender forms part of a broader campaign to address the proliferation of loose firearms within the brigade’s area of responsibility. He stressed that strong partnerships with stakeholders and local communities remain essential in fostering a safer and more secure environment.

Meanwhile, Maj. Gen. Leonardo I. Peña, head of Joint Task Force Orion and the 11th Infantry Division, commended both troops and civilian stakeholders for their role in the accomplishment. He underscored that each surrendered firearm represents a meaningful reduction in the potential for violence and a concrete step toward sustained peace in the region.

The development underscores the continuing commitment of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, in partnership with the Philippine National Police and local government units, to promote peace, security, and development across Sulu.
