DAVAO REGION, Philippines — Continuous heavy rains brought by the prevailing shear line weather system have triggered floods, landslides, rising river levels, and class suspensions across several areas in Mindanao, particularly in the provinces of Davao de Oro, Davao del Norte, and Surigao del Sur.

Local disaster response units reported multiple weather-related incidents from Thursday, February 19, to early Friday, February 20, as persistent rains continued to affect communities across the region.

In Compostela, a portion of soil collapsed along a road in Purok 23, Barangay Ngan on Thursday afternoon due to intense rainfall. According to the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), clearing operations were immediately conducted and the road has since been reopened to motorists. Meanwhile, a large tree also fell in Purok 4, Barangay Panansalan, which was promptly cleared with the assistance of soldiers and local residents. Authorities reminded the public to remain cautious as rains continue.

Another landslide was reported Friday morning along Kilometer 74 of the national highway in Barangay Sawangan, Mawab, where debris temporarily affected road access amid adverse weather conditions.

In nearby Nabunturan, officials ordered a preemptive evacuation in Barangay Magsaysay on Thursday due to continuous rainfall. Affected residents were temporarily sheltered at the Magsaysay Evacuation Center with assistance from responders, including the 25th Infantry Battalion, barangay officials, the municipal government, and the Philippine Red Cross–Davao de Oro Chapter.

Authorities also conducted inspections in Barangay Magcagong, Maragusan, after large boulders fell in the area, reportedly dislodged by recent weather disturbances.

Flooding has also been reported in several communities. In Bislig City, rescue teams continued evacuation operations as of 6:00 a.m. Friday in Barangay Tabon after persistent heavy rains caused flooding in parts of the Bogac District. The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), along with partner responders, is working to secure families in high-risk and impassable areas while urging residents to follow official advisories and remain vigilant.

Water levels are also rising in Braulio E. Dujali, where authorities reported that the Magupising Bridge has reached the second alert or monitoring phase as of Friday morning due to continuous rainfall. Disaster officials warned residents living near waterways to stay alert for possible flooding.

In Asuncion, several houses were affected by flooding in Barangay Doña Andrea after a creek overflowed amid heavy rains early Friday.

Due to unsafe weather conditions, the local government of Davao City suspended classes at all levels—both public and private—on Friday, February 20. Several other local government units also announced class suspensions, including Maragusan, Mawab, Nabunturan, Monkayo, Montevista, and Maco in Davao de Oro, as well as Asuncion, Carmen, New Corella, San Isidro, Kapalong, Santo Tomas, and Panabo City in Davao del Norte.

Disaster response agencies continue to monitor the situation as rains persist across parts of Mindanao. Authorities are urging residents, especially those in landslide- and flood-prone areas, to remain vigilant, heed evacuation orders when necessary, and follow advisories from local officials as the shear line continues to bring unstable weather conditions to the region.
