CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — A popular Bisaya content creator and performer, known online as “Kubkub Goy” or Marinong DJ, was suddenly punched in the head by an alleged intoxicated man during a live performance at Barangay Iponan Plaza shortly after midnight, following remarks that reportedly touched on government flood control projects.

According to the Philippine National Police (PNP), the incident occurred at around 12:10 a.m., as confirmed by P/Lt. Elyhen Logroño, Deputy Station Commander of Police Station 7 in Bulua. The victim was identified as Jimbo Yurongo, popularly known as Marinong DJ, a well-known Cebuano vlogger with a large social media following.
Sudden Attack Caught on Video
Videos circulating on social media show Marinong DJ performing on stage and happily taking selfies with fans when a man suddenly approached and punched him in the head without warning. The unexpected assault shocked spectators and immediately disrupted the program.
Following the attack, fans and event staff rushed to assist the vlogger and escorted him off the stage to seek medical attention. He was later brought to a nearby medical facility for evaluation.
In the same video, several audience members were seen restraining and assaulting the suspect, who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol, before police intervened.
Suspect Identified and Arrested
Authorities identified the suspect as Maagad, 40 years old, a resident of Zone 7, Barangay Bulua, Cagayan de Oro City. Police said he was immediately arrested at the scene and taken into custody.
Investigators also revealed that the suspect is a known supporter of former President Bongbong Marcos Jr. (BBM) and a former detainee of the Lumbia City Jail.
Motive Linked to Flood Control Remarks
During police interrogation, the suspect admitted to drinking alcohol prior to the incident. He claimed that he became angry after hearing Marinong DJ allegedly criticize the government, particularly regarding flood control projects, during his performance.
In his statement, the suspect reportedly said:
“Kung mag-concert, mag-concert lang. Dili hisgotan ang gobyerno kay dugay ko nagtrabaho sa flood control projects.”
(“If you are going to hold a concert, just perform. Don’t talk about the government because I worked for a long time in flood control projects.”)
Police said the suspect’s emotional outburst and intoxicated state may have contributed to his violent behavior.
No Statement Yet from the Victim
As of this writing, Marinong DJ has not released an official statement regarding the incident. Supporters and fellow content creators have expressed concern and solidarity with him through social media, condemning the act of violence.
Many netizens have also called for stronger security measures at public events, especially those involving popular performers and online personalities.
Police Reminder on Public Safety
The PNP reiterated that violence has no place in public gatherings and urged the public to exercise restraint and responsibility, particularly when consuming alcohol.
Authorities are now preparing the appropriate charges against the suspect, while further investigation is ongoing to determine if additional offenses may be filed.
The incident has renewed discussions on freedom of expression, political tolerance, and the safety of performers in public spaces across Cagayan de Oro and beyond.
