NABUNTURAN, Davao de Oro — A tragic incident involving a mother and her two young children has shocked residents of Purok 5, Barangay Magsaysay in Nabunturan, highlighting once again the urgent need to address mental health issues and strengthen community support systems.

Police authorities confirmed that the 28-year-old mother, identified only by the aliases “Len” and “Nena,” may have been suffering from severe depression when the incident occurred early Monday morning, February 17, 2026, at around 6:00 to 7:00 a.m.
According to initial reports, the victims—a three-year-old child and a seven-month-old infant—were found lifeless inside their home. Their grandfather reportedly discovered the children and immediately sought help after seeing that both had sustained fatal stab wounds.
The mother was also found injured, with wounds on her neck and chest, indicating an apparent attempt to take her own life after the attack. She was rushed to Davao de Oro Provincial Hospital – Montevista, where she remains in critical condition as of this writing.
Investigators said a kitchen knife believed to have been used in the incident was recovered at the scene. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the full circumstances and possible contributing factors.
Police revealed that the woman’s husband, a mechanic working in General Santos City, immediately returned home after learning of the tragedy.
Community in Mourning
Neighbors and local residents expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing the family as quiet and unassuming. Many said they were unaware of the emotional struggles the mother had been facing.
Local officials emphasized the need for compassion and understanding, urging the public to refrain from spreading speculation and to respect the privacy of the grieving family.
“This is a painful reminder that mental health struggles can remain hidden,” a local official said. “We must learn to listen more and care for one another.”
Depression Is a Serious Illness
Mental health professionals stress that depression is not simply sadness or weakness, but a serious medical condition that can affect judgment, emotions, and behavior if left untreated.
Experts warn that untreated depression, especially among parents and caregivers, can lead to overwhelming feelings of hopelessness and isolation. Early intervention, counseling, and strong family and community support can make a life-saving difference.
