MANAY, Davao Oriental — What was supposed to be a joyful family bonding turned into a heartbreaking tragedy after two brothers drowned at Laguidong Beach Resort on Tuesday afternoon, February 17, 2026.

The victims were identified as Rommel Pedro, 14, and Edcil Pedro, 12, residents of Purok Sagasa, Barangay Dadong, Tarragona, Davao Oriental.
According to relatives, the siblings were swimming together with family members when strong waves suddenly swept the younger brother into a deeper part of the sea at around 1:20 p.m. Seeing his sibling in danger, Rommel rushed to rescue Edcil. However, both were reportedly pulled farther offshore by the powerful current and eventually submerged.
Members of a responding rescue team managed to retrieve the younger boy first, followed shortly by his older brother. Both were found unconscious. Rescuers and bystanders immediately attempted to revive them, but despite efforts, the two siblings were declared dead.
Authorities said the incident highlights the dangers of strong currents, especially in open coastal areas, even during seemingly calm conditions. They urged beachgoers to remain vigilant, observe safety advisories, and avoid swimming in deep or rough waters without proper supervision.
The tragedy has left the family in deep mourning, particularly their father, Edmund Pedro, who is still grieving the recent death of his wife. Relatives described him as devastated by the sudden loss of his two sons, coming so soon after the passing of their mother.
Local officials and community members have extended their condolences to the bereaved family, while resort management and authorities continue to remind the public to prioritize safety during beach outings to prevent similar incidents.
Investigations are ongoing to determine if additional safety measures need to be strengthened at the resort and nearby coastal areas.
