DAVAO CITY — The decomposing body recovered from the Matina Pangi River in Barangay Matina Pangi, Km. 9, was positively identified on Sunday as Dember Pillanon, a 14-year-old resident of Sitio Eskwela, Barangay Catalunan Grande, according to his father.

In an interview, Rolan Pillanon confirmed that the remains belonged to his son, who was last seen at their home on Friday, January 16, 2026. The body was discovered floating in the river on Sunday, January 18, prompting immediate identification efforts.
Mr. Pillanon expressed disbelief over the circumstances surrounding his son’s death, saying he did not think the boy would have gone alone to bathe in the Matina Pangi River. He believes Dember may have been with someone prior to reaching the area where his body was found.
The grieving father said the family is seeking clarity on what led to the minor’s death and is calling for a thorough investigation. Authorities have confirmed that an inquiry is underway to determine the cause of death and to establish whether foul play was involved.
Local police and concerned agencies are expected to conduct further examinations and interviews as part of the investigation into the tragic incident that has left the family and community in mourning in Davao City.
