Magsaysay, Davao del Sur (September 16, 2025) — A 55-year-old businessman was found dead after being swept away by strong floodwaters in Barangay Kanapulo, Magsaysay, Davao del Sur, on September 15.

According to the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) of Magsaysay, the victim, a resident of Barangay Kisante in Makilala, Cotabato, was confirmed to have drowned after being carried away by raging floods triggered by heavy rains.

Local reports revealed that hours of continuous downpour caused creeks and rivers in the municipality to overflow. The rains were intense enough to raise the situation to an orange rainfall warning level, signaling potentially dangerous flooding.

Fortunately, flood-control dikes in the town proper prevented the inundation from reaching more critical areas, sparing the poblacion from severe damage.

Residents initially discovered the lifeless body in Barangay Kanapulo and immediately reported the incident to authorities. Investigations are ongoing, though officials believe the businessman was caught off guard by the sudden surge of floodwaters.

The local government continues to remind communities living near rivers, creeks, and low-lying areas to remain vigilant, especially during prolonged heavy rains, as the risk of flash floods and landslides remains high.
