ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – June 14, 2025 — Normal operations at the Zamboanga International Airport resumed after a bomb threat was reported aboard Cebu Pacific Flight 5J851, which was still in Manila before departure earlier this morning.

According to authorities, a flight attendant discovered a piece of tissue paper with the words “MAY BOMBA” (There is a bomb) written on it inside the aircraft lavatory. The incident occurred shortly after 8:00 AM while the aircraft was being prepared for departure.

The flight attendant immediately reported the matter to ground security personnel. The Aviation Security Unit (AVSEUCU9) quickly conducted a thorough inspection of the aircraft. The search yielded no explosives, and the threat was deemed a hoax.

By 8:59 AM, the situation was declared under control, and Zamboanga International Airport resumed normal operations.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) issued a reminder to the public that making bomb threats or jokes about bombs, even in jest, is a criminal offense under Presidential Decree No. 1727. This law penalizes those who maliciously disseminate false information regarding bombs, explosives, or similar threats.

Importance of Securing Flights and Passenger Responsibility

Incidents like this highlight the critical importance of aviation security and the shared responsibility of everyone involved in air travel. Airport personnel, flight crews, and security units are trained to act swiftly in such situations to ensure the safety of passengers and crew. However, passengers also play a vital role.

Jokes or false threats about bombs are not harmless pranks—they disrupt operations, cause fear, and can lead to flight delays, financial losses, and even legal consequences. These incidents divert valuable resources and attention from genuine security threats.

The public is urged to remain vigilant and responsible. Ensuring the safety of air travel is a collective responsibility, and all passengers must adhere to airport and airline rules to protect themselves and others.

Authorities assure the public that security measures remain strict and are in place to prevent similar incidents in the future.
