Kumalarang, Zamboanga del Sur — Several barangays in the municipality of Kumalarang were submerged in floodwaters on Saturday, May 17, 2025, following hours of continuous heavy rain brought about by the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ).

According to the Municipal Information Office, the downpour began early Saturday and quickly caused water levels to rise in the Sicade and Kumalarang Rivers. This led to widespread flooding in the barangays of Sicade, Bogayo, Gawil, Boyugan East, and Poblacion.

Local government units, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), and other rescue responders immediately conducted operations to assist affected residents. Authorities are still assessing the full extent of the damage and the total number of families affected by the flooding.

Many households lost belongings, food supplies, and other essentials due to the flash floods. In response, the Provincial Government, through the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) and the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), has mobilized to provide assistance. Relief packs containing food and basic necessities are set to be delivered to Kumalarang this afternoon.

Urgent needs of the affected residents include:

  • Clothing
  • Clean drinking water
  • Rice
  • Canned goods (sardines, meatloaf, etc.)
  • Noodles and ready-to-eat food
  • Hygiene kits (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, etc.)
  • Diapers (for children and adults)
  • Sleeping mats, blankets, and pillows

The local government continues to appeal for help, emphasizing that even small donations can go a long way in easing the burden on flood-stricken families.
