Kidapawan City — The Provincial Coconut Industry Development Council (PCIDC) convened its regular meeting on Monday, April 14, 2025, gathering Small Coconut Farmers Organization (SCFO) Federation Presidents and key stakeholders from across the province. The meeting was held at the Conference Room of the Agri-Center Building, Capitol Compound in Amas, Kidapawan City.
The assembly served as a venue to discuss and align efforts toward strengthening the province’s coconut industry, which remains a vital source of livelihood for many farming families. Highlighting the agenda was the Philippine Coconut Authority’s (PCA) rollout of its 2025 programs, including the implementation of the Philippine Rural Development Program (PRDP) Upscale — a national initiative designed to boost agri-enterprise development in rural communities.
During the meeting, city and municipal coconut farmer presidents also presented their activity reports, covering projects and accomplishments from January to March this year. Stakeholders further explored new proposals aimed at enhancing the stability and growth of the province’s coconut industry.
The PCIDC meeting is part of the local government’s proactive approach to ensure that coconut farmers’ voices are heard, their needs addressed, and their aspirations included in development plans. By fostering collaboration and consultation among farmers, government agencies, and private sector partners, the council aims to create more opportunities for the coconut industry to thrive.
This initiative is strongly supported by the Provincial Government of Cotabato, under the leadership of Governor Emmylou “Lala” J. Taliño-Mendoza. The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAg), led by Acting Provincial Agriculturist Elena Ragonton, continues to prioritize the sector as part of its commitment to strengthen agriculture and rural livelihoods.
Also present during the meeting were Provincial Advisory Council (PAC) Member Ramon Floresta, Development Specialist Samson Mate, and PCA representative Marjorie Jalipa.
Why Supporting Coconut Farmers Matters
Coconut farming is a cornerstone of livelihood for many rural families in North Cotabato, providing not just income but also food security and opportunities for local entrepreneurship. However, the industry faces persistent challenges, including price instability, aging coconut trees, and vulnerability to climate change.
Meetings like the PCIDC assembly are crucial for shaping responsive policies and programs tailored to the needs of farmers. Strengthening this sector ensures sustainable economic growth, uplifts rural communities, and honors the hard work of farmers who fuel local industries with this versatile crop. Continued support and attention from government and industry stakeholders can open more pathways for innovation, resilience, and prosperity in the coconut industry.
