Davao City, Philippines — In a move steeped in symbolism and civic pride, the Davao City Council has officially declared March 28 of every year as a day of celebration to recognize the life, leadership, and enduring contributions of former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, a native son of Mindanao and the country’s 16th President.

Through Resolution No. 01037-23, adopted unanimously on March 28, 2023, the city government formalized the annual observance of Duterte Day. The resolution acknowledges Duterte’s pivotal role in shaping not only the City of Davao but also the broader national landscape during his decades in public service.
Born on March 28, 1945 in Maasin City, Southern Leyte, Duterte became a long-time public servant in Davao City, serving successively as Vice Mayor, Mayor, and Congressman before ascending to the presidency in 2016. He holds the distinction of being the first Mindanaoan and Dabawenyo to become President of the Republic of the Philippines.
His presidency, which ran from June 30, 2016 to June 30, 2022, was marked by bold reforms and a strong political will that, according to the resolution, “uplifted the lives of the Filipino people” and contributed significantly to the development of the nation. The local government recognizes Duterte as a “living hero of the Republic.”
The resolution was principally authored by Councilor Diosdado Angelo Junior R. Mahipus and was seconded by a broad coalition of councilors. It highlights the importance of remembering Duterte’s legacy to serve as a source of inspiration to future generations of Dabawenyos and Filipinos.
Copies of the resolution are to be distributed to key offices including the City Mayor’s Office, Office of the Vice Mayor, city departments, national government agencies operating in Davao, and the former president himself.
The declaration of Duterte Day ensures that every March 28, Davao City will reflect on the journey of a local leader whose political career evolved into national prominence, cementing his place in Philippine history.
