Tipo-Tipo, Basilan – A tragedy was narrowly avoided in Basilan after a vigilant community member tipped off authorities about a hidden improvised explosive device (IED), prompting a swift response from the 45th Infantry Battalion (45IB) of the Philippine Army.

Acting on the critical information, troops from the 45IB immediately conducted operations in the area of Tipo-Tipo, where they discovered and safely recovered an IED containing two 81mm mortars. The device was found hidden beneath a structure, posing a grave threat to nearby residents.
The operation followed reports of unidentified armed individuals in the vicinity. A brief confrontation ensued, forcing the suspects to flee. In addition to the explosive device, soldiers recovered a firearm and other materials indicating recent insurgent activity.
Authorities said the prompt response and coordination between the concerned citizen and the 45IB were key in preventing a possible catastrophe. Had the IED detonated, it could have caused massive destruction, endangered dozens of lives, and disrupted the fragile peace in the community.
“This is a testament to what we can achieve when the community and our soldiers work hand in hand,” a representative from the 45IB said. “The bravery of the individual who came forward has saved lives and strengthened the resolve of this community.”
The explosive materials were safely removed by specialized teams, while the area was secured to prevent further danger. The military continues to monitor the situation and pursue those responsible.
The incident underscores the vital role of citizen vigilance in maintaining peace and security, especially in areas historically affected by conflict. It also reflects the growing trust between local residents and security forces.
Despite ongoing challenges, the people of Basilan remain steadfast in their commitment to peace. Their unity and cooperation are powerful tools against fear and violence.
The 45IB and local leaders expressed their gratitude to the courageous informant and reaffirmed their dedication to safeguarding the province.
