The Provincial Government of Davao Oriental, in coordination with various government agencies and stakeholders, continues to work tirelessly to safeguard residents from different calamities. This ongoing commitment to disaster preparedness was further reinforced during the first-quarter meeting of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) held on March 28 at the Provincial Capitol.
Key programs and initiatives discussed in the meeting included disaster preparedness strategies, geohazard assessments, and emergency response measures. These efforts aim to ensure the province’s readiness in the face of natural disasters by strengthening government agencies’ and provincial offices’ capacity to respond effectively.
Under the leadership of Governor Niño Uy, Davao Oriental has taken the lead in the region through innovative disaster preparedness initiatives. One of the flagship programs under Executive Order No. 48, known as “Alalay para sa mas Luwas ug Andam na mga Barangay” (ALAB), provides stronger support and capacity-building for barangays in disaster response. The initiative also includes the dissemination of “alert tips” tarpaulins as part of the province’s information and education campaign. To date, the ALAB program has already reached 113 barangays and will continue until all 183 barangays in the province are covered.
Additionally, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Region XI (MGB-XI) presented its geohazard assessments conducted in various barangays of Davao Oriental. The report identified areas at risk of landslides and flooding, highlighting the need for heightened preparedness, stricter monitoring, and timely public advisories.
Provincial Administrator Atty. Alejandro Aquino, representing Governor Uy during the meeting, emphasized the provincial government’s strict and proactive approach to monitoring, preparedness, and collaboration with local barangays to ensure the safety of residents. He also encouraged government agencies and provincial offices to maximize their social media platforms to disseminate crucial information regarding disaster preparedness campaigns and weather forecasts.
Governor Uy, who has been at the forefront of disaster preparedness efforts, remains committed to strengthening partnerships with government agencies and stakeholders. His administration aims to ensure that Davao Oriental residents not only receive protection from disasters but also benefit from programs that bring progress and development to the community.
