MANAY, Davao Oriental — A 16-year-old student of Del Pilar National High School was found dead near the family’s residence in Purok 1, Barangay Del Pilar, Manay, Davao Oriental, on October 3, 2026, prompting police authorities to conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to the Manay Municipal Police Station, authorities received information about the incident shortly after 8:30 a.m. on October 3. Police personnel immediately proceeded to the area to verify the report and conduct an initial investigation.

Responding officers found the teenager in an apparent hanging incident involving a mango tree near the residence. Police also documented a visible mark around the victim’s neck during the initial examination of the scene.

Authorities secured and preserved the area while initial documentation was carried out and witnesses were interviewed. Based on the initial police assessment, investigators said they had not found any apparent indications of foul play at the scene.

However, police stressed that the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are continuing to establish the circumstances that preceded the incident and are coordinating with the appropriate offices for medico-legal examination and other documentation.

The victim was brought to Manay Hospital by personnel of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) for medical assessment and emergency intervention. The attending physician, Dr. John Chester Tumandong, MD, subsequently declared the victim dead on arrival at 10:45 a.m.

Police said relevant authorities are continuing to process the medico-legal requirements and other records that may assist investigators in determining the full circumstances of the death.

Because the victim was a minor, authorities are expected to handle information concerning the teenager and the family with appropriate confidentiality and sensitivity.

The police investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have yet to establish any definitive motive or other circumstances beyond what has been documented in the initial report.

The incident also underscores the importance of providing immediate support to young people who may be experiencing emotional distress or other difficulties. Families, schools, and communities are encouraged to remain attentive to signs that a young person may need help and to seek professional assistance when necessary.
