As part of its commitment to promoting the well-being of Dabawenyos, the City’s Mental Wellness Center for the Homeless (MWCH) continues to extend its services to individuals struggling with mental health challenges.
The MWCH has provided support to 297 outpatients from January to December 2024. Additionally, at least 24 patients have been admitted for more intensive care within the same period. The center serves as a refuge for homeless individuals in need of inpatient care while also offering outpatient and psychological services to those facing mental health difficulties.
Dr. Luis Antonio Flores, the manager of MWCH, emphasized that all health centers across Davao City are equipped to offer mental health services. He pointed out that individuals do not necessarily need to visit the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) to receive care, as local health centers have trained doctors capable of addressing mental health concerns.
“Our doctors are well-equipped and have undergone training under the Mental Health Gap Action Program, so people may seek help at our health centers instead of waiting in line at SPMC,” Flores said during an interview with the city-owned Davao City Disaster Radio.
He also highlighted the importance of recognizing early signs of mental health issues within families. Warning signs include sudden behavioral changes, loss of appetite, and irregular sleep patterns, which may indicate the need for professional intervention.
“People usually follow a routine in their daily lives. If someone deviates from their usual habits or starts engaging in risky behaviors, it may be time for them to seek a check-up,” Flores added.
The MWCH encourages individuals seeking mental health consultations to visit their office at the SPMC-IPBM Compound, located on C.M. Recto Street in the Poblacion District. Dabawenyos may also contact them through their hotline at 244-2255 or the City Health Office’s contact numbers: 0927-604-5797 (Globe & Viber); 0939-340-5675 and 0961-526-2861 (Smart & Viber); and 0906-367-4671 (Globe).
With the continuous efforts of MWCH and other city health facilities, Davao City remains steadfast in its mission to provide accessible and quality mental health services for all.
