ZAMBOANGA CITY—A proactive group of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Zamboanga City is taking a firm stand against the growing issue of fake PWD identification (ID) cards, a problem that has been spreading nationwide.
According to the group, the root of the problem often lies in the submission of falsified medical certificates—an essential requirement in the PWD ID application process. This loophole has led to the unauthorized acquisition of IDs, allowing ineligible individuals to access benefits intended for persons with genuine disabilities.
The group highlighted the critical need for stricter verification processes to curb this fraudulent practice. They are urging Persons with Disabilities Affairs Offices (PDAOs) across the country to implement more rigorous checks on the legitimacy of medical certificates submitted for PWD ID applications. By doing so, they aim to uphold the integrity of the PWD identification system and ensure that only those genuinely entitled receive the necessary support and privileges.
The initiative by Zamboanga City’s PWD stakeholders serves as a model for other PWD communities facing similar challenges. Their advocacy underscores the need for reforms in the verification system and a more stringent approach in the issuance of PWD IDs.
Authorities and concerned agencies are encouraged to collaborate in strengthening the system to prevent abuse and safeguard the rights and benefits of the rightful PWD beneficiaries.
