ZAMBOANGA CITY – Mayor John Dalipe proudly received a commemorative copy of the historic Murillo Velarde 1734 Map and its certificate of authenticity in a ceremonial turnover led by Mel Velarde, Chairman of the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication. The event was held at the National Museum – Fort Pilar in Rio Hondo on February 4, 2025.
The turnover ceremony was witnessed by City Tourism Officer Sarita Sebastian, representatives from the National Museum-Zamboanga City, and members of the Philippine Medical Association in Chicago (PMAC), who were in the city for the JD Ayuda Program – Grand Medical Mission from February 1-3.
The Murillo Velarde 1734 Map, often referred to as the “Mother of all Philippine maps,” is regarded as the first scientific map of the Philippines. It was originally published in 1734 in Manila by Spanish friar Pedro Murillo Velarde, with the execution of the map carried out by two Filipinos—Francisco Suarez, who drew it, and Nicolas dela Cruz Bagay, who engraved it. The map not only depicts the Philippine archipelago but also includes six vignettes illustrating various people and places in the country during that era.
The commemorative copy of the map will be displayed at the National Museum in Rio Hondo, allowing residents and visitors to appreciate its historical significance.
Meanwhile, PMAC delegates took the opportunity to tour the National Museum, expressing admiration for Zamboanga City’s rich and colorful history and culture. Their visit further strengthened cultural ties and underscored the importance of preserving the city’s heritage.
