Davao City, Philippines — The City Government of Davao, through its City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), has provided financial assistance to local government units (LGUs) in the Visayas affected by the recent eruption of Mt. Kanlaon.
On December 9, Mt. Kanlaon erupted from its summit vent, severely impacting several areas in the Visayas. The disaster led to the declaration of a State of Calamity in one municipality, three cities, and two provinces.
From February 2 to 5, CDRRMO Head Alfredo Baloran personally delivered financial assistance to the affected LGUs. The provincial governments of Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental each received P1 million in aid from Davao City. Meanwhile, the cities of La Carlota, Canlaon, and Bago received P500,000 each, and the Municipality of Villahermoso was granted P300,000.
Bago City Mayor Nicholas Yulo expressed his gratitude for Davao City’s generosity and unwavering support. “Malaking tulong ito. On behalf of the people of Bago City, I would like to sincerely thank you for the help that you’ve given us,” he said.
In addition to providing financial aid, Baloran shared valuable insights on emergency response strategies with the members of the Canlaon Incident Management Team, further strengthening disaster preparedness efforts in the affected areas.
For years, the City Government of Davao has consistently extended assistance to LGUs severely hit by disasters. The financial aid for Mt. Kanlaon victims was sourced from the city’s 30 percent Quick Response Fund (QRF) under the Local Disaster Risk Reduction (LDRR) Fund, reaffirming Davao’s commitment to disaster response and recovery efforts nationwide.
