Mawab, Davao de Oro – In a landmark move towards sustainable peace and reconciliation, the 10th Infantry (Agila) Division of the Philippine Army formally presented 232 former rebels (FRs) to Special Assistant to the President (SAP) Secretary Antonio Ernesto Lagdameo Jr. on February 6, 2025, at Agila Hall, Camp General Manuel T. Yan Sr., Barangay Tuboran, Mawab, Davao de Oro.

The surrendering individuals comprised former regular members of the New People’s Army (NPA) and Milisyang Bayan, who decided to return to mainstream society. Their surrender occurred across the Joint Operational Area of the 10ID throughout 2024 and the first quarter of 2025. In conjunction with their surrender, the FRs turned over a total of 111 firearms, including 64 high-powered and 47 low-powered weapons, which were formally presented during the ceremony.

Secretary Lagdameo underscored the administration’s unwavering commitment to the reintegration and rehabilitation of former insurgents.

“Today is a testament to the effectiveness of our peace programs. It reflects the strong collaboration between the national and local governments, as well as the military, in fostering genuine reconciliation,” he stated.

Echoing this sentiment, Major General Allan Hambala, Commander of the 10ID, emphasized the need for continuous cooperation to maintain an insurgency-free environment within the Agila Division’s area of operations.

“Today’s event is not only a celebration of transformation but also a call to action for all of us to strengthen our commitment to building bridges of trust and reconciliation,” Maj. Gen. Hambala said.

As part of the government’s support for reintegration, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) distributed food packs to the former rebels.

The event was graced by key officials, including Mindanao Development Authority Chairperson Secretary Leo Tereso Magno, Eastern Mindanao Command Commander LtGen Luis Rex Bergante, Police Regional Office XI Regional Director PBGen Leon Victor Rosete, and several local chief executives. Their presence underscored the multi-agency collaboration essential in achieving lasting peace and development in Mindanao.
