Zamboanga City— A dramatic shootout unfolded in Zone-1, Barangay Ayala, on Monday evening, leaving two gunmen dead and a police officer injured. The incident occurred around 7 PM near the Ayala Parish Church, according to the Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO).
Police Senior Master Sergeant (PMSG) Ryan Mariano of Ayala Police Station-9 sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen but is now in stable condition and recovering in a hospital.
The Incident
Initial reports from PLt. Col. Areston Limos, Officer-in-Charge of the ZCPO, revealed that PMSG Mariano was on duty outside the church, providing security for the large number of churchgoers in the area. Suddenly, two gunmen on separate motorcycles appeared and opened fire at Mariano using .45-caliber pistols.
Despite his injury, Mariano managed to return fire, hitting both gunmen in the head. One suspect was declared dead on the spot, while the other was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. No civilians were harmed during the incident.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities are still working to identify the two suspects and determine their motive. The bravery and quick response of PMSG Mariano were praised, with witnesses likening the scene to a high-action movie. Some residents even compared Mariano to a popular fictional hero, “Cardo Dalisay,” known for his courage and heroism.
Community Cooperation
One witness noted the remarkable role of a car owner who stayed in place during the shootout, inadvertently providing cover for the injured officer. The ZCPO expressed gratitude for the cooperation and vigilance of the community in ensuring the safety of the area.
As investigations continue, the ZCPO has assured the public of heightened security measures to prevent similar incidents.
