Kiamba, Sarangani Province – Local conservation efforts received a significant boost as two separate sea turtle rescue and release operations took place in the province, highlighting the community’s commitment to marine biodiversity conservation.

On January 19, a female Green Sea Turtle (𝘊𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘮𝘺𝘥𝘢𝘴) was successfully rescued and returned to its natural habitat after becoming entangled in a fishnet in Nalus, Kiamba. The operation was carried out by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources 12 – Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR 12-CENRO) Kiamba, in coordination with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), the Philippine National Police Maritime Group (PNP Maritime), and Protected Area Rangers (PA Rangers). At approximately 7:30 AM, the turtle was safely released back into the sea.
The rescued Green Sea Turtle, an adult species measuring 43 cm in length and 42 cm in width, is classified as endangered under DENR Administrative Order 2019-09 and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This designation underscores the threats facing the species, as continued environmental challenges jeopardize its survival in the wild.
Further reinforcing marine conservation efforts, another significant release took place on January 24 in Barangay Tambilil, Kiamba. A total of 53 Olive Ridley Sea Turtle (𝘓𝘦𝘱𝘪𝘥𝘰𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘺𝘴 𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘢) hatchlings were released into the sea. This effort was a collaborative initiative between DENR 12-CENRO Kiamba, Bantay Dagat, PNP Maritime, PCG, PA Rangers, and MENRO.
The active presence of Bantay Dagat played a crucial role in ensuring the hatchlings’ safe return to their natural habitat. Following their emergence from the nest, the hatchlings were carefully guided to the sea, giving them a better chance of survival in the wild.
These recent conservation activities emphasize the dedication of the local community and environmental agencies in preserving Sarangani Province’s rich marine biodiversity. Through sustained efforts and cooperation, the protection of these endangered sea turtles continues to gain ground, reinforcing the province’s commitment to marine wildlife conservation.
