In a heartfelt initiative to support families of children with special needs, the Tagum City Youth Development Office (YDO), in collaboration with the ATIMAN Center and youth volunteers, launched a three-day Functional Daily Living Skills Training on January 17, 2025. The event, held at AVR 4 of the Tagum City Hall, has brought together 32 parents eager to enhance their caregiving skills and provide a better future for their children.
This training, which runs until January 19, 2025, aims to equip parents with effective strategies for managing daily care routines, fostering independence, and nurturing the growth of their children with special needs.
Equipping Parents for Everyday Challenges
The program features expert guidance from registered therapists, Fideo Nadine Raya B. Toribio and Renee Camille D. Cahinde. Through their sessions, parents are introduced to practical techniques and information essential for their children’s development and well-being.
“Parents are the primary caregivers, and empowering them with the right skills and knowledge creates a positive ripple effect on their children’s lives,” shared one of the facilitators during the opening session.
A Community Effort Through Project #YouMatter
The training is part of Project #YouMatter, a youth-focused program funded by Youth Leadership and Democracy (YouthLed PH) under The Asia Foundation and USAID. It highlights the importance of providing tailored interventions for vulnerable sectors in the community, a commitment echoed by Mayor Rey T. Uy’s administration.
Mayor Uy emphasized the importance of such programs in his remarks, stating, “Through initiatives like these, we affirm our commitment to supporting the most vulnerable members of our community, ensuring they receive the attention and care they deserve.”
Youth-Driven Advocacy
The event also showcased the active involvement of Tagum City’s youth volunteers. Their participation underscored the significance of engaging young people in meaningful causes, creating a culture of compassion and inclusivity.
A Brighter Path Forward
Parents expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn and connect with other families facing similar challenges. As one participant noted, “This training not only equips us with skills but also gives us hope and encouragement to continue doing our best for our children.”
By empowering parents with knowledge and skills, the initiative reflects the city’s broader commitment to fostering an inclusive society where every individual, regardless of their circumstances, can thrive.
Looking Ahead
As the training concludes, participants are expected to return home with renewed confidence and practical tools to apply in their daily lives. The success of this initiative serves as a model for other communities striving to uplift families in vulnerable sectors.
This endeavor is a testament to what can be achieved when local government, organizations, and communities work hand-in-hand to address the needs of society’s most vulnerable members.
