Authorities intensified nationwide enforcement against illicit tobacco trade following high-level government directives to strengthen the crackdown on illegal cigarette distribution and tax evasion, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) reported.

In a series of coordinated operations conducted on April 27, 2026, CIDG Provincial Field Units across Davao Region arrested seven suspects and confiscated a total of ₱2,015,000 worth of alleged illicit cigarettes lacking required graphic health warnings and evading proper tax payments.

The simultaneous law enforcement actions were carried out in Davao del Norte, Davao Occidental, and Davao Oriental, underscoring the continued expansion of government efforts to curb the illegal tobacco trade.

In Davao del Norte, three male suspects were arrested in Barangay San Miguel, Tagum City, with authorities seizing approximately ₱940,000 worth of suspected illicit cigarettes.

In a separate operation in Davao City, two individuals were apprehended in Barangay Lansona, Calinan, where law enforcers confiscated around ₱875,000 worth of similar contraband.

Meanwhile, in Davao Oriental, two more suspects were arrested within the same day, with officers recovering approximately ₱200,000 worth of alleged illegal cigarettes.

All seized items are now under proper documentation and custody as evidence for filing of appropriate charges.

CIDG officials emphasized that the intensified campaign is anchored on Republic Act No. 10643, or the Graphic Health Warnings Law, which mandates the use of health warning labels on tobacco products to protect public health and discourage smoking, particularly among vulnerable populations.

Authorities stressed that graphic health warnings are a critical public health tool, designed to clearly communicate the life-threatening risks of smoking, bridge information gaps among consumers with limited literacy, and combat deceptive trade practices within the tobacco industry.

The CIDG also reaffirmed its commitment to sustained operations against illegal cigarette trading networks, warning that enforcement actions will continue nationwide against individuals and groups engaged in the manufacture, distribution, and sale of untaxed and non-compliant tobacco products.

Officials commended field operatives involved in the successful operations, highlighting the coordinated effort of regional and provincial units in disrupting illicit trade activities and enforcing compliance with national laws.

CIDG leadership reiterated that the agency remains firm in its mandate to uphold the law and dismantle criminal networks involved in the illegal tobacco trade across the country.
