Maitum, Sarangani Province – A total of 200 bamboo propagules were planted along the banks of the Kalaong River in Maitum on Thursday, November 14, as part of a celebration for Clean Air Month and National Environmental Awareness Month. The activity, spearheaded by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Kiamba, aimed to enhance riverbank stability and support local reforestation efforts.

The planting initiative was a collaborative effort that included Daguma Agro Minerals Inc. (DAMI), Sultan Energy Power Corporation (SEPC), and students from Golden State College of Kiamba. This partnership highlights the commitment of various local organizations and institutions toward environmental conservation. In addition to planting new bamboo propagules, the group also replaced previously planted bamboo that had not survived, covering more than 500 meters along the riverbank.
According to CENRO Kiamba, bamboo was chosen due to its rapid growth and significant environmental benefits, such as mitigating soil erosion and contributing to a healthier ecosystem. CENRO officials emphasized that engaging local students and organizations underscores the need for a collective approach in addressing environmental issues, noting that the bamboo planting enhances natural protection for the riverbank and strengthens community efforts to establish a greener, more sustainable future.
DAMI and SEPC, who have committed to the long-term conservation of the Kalaong River as designated “River Adopters,” reaffirmed their dedication to preserving the watershed. Both organizations plan to continue their conservation initiatives in the coming years, ensuring that Maitum’s green vision remains a shared goal among the community and its supporters.
