Three Dead, Two Hospitalized After Lightning Strike in Bayog, Zamboanga del Sur

Tragedy struck yesterday afternoon in Purok 6, Barangay Damit, Bayog, Zamboanga del Sur, when five teenagers were hit by lightning. The incident occurred around 6:00 PM, resulting in the deaths of three victims, while two others remain hospitalized in critical condition.

The victims have been identified as Alexander P. Equin, 13, Justine Ocsoma, 16, Julius Kent Amad, 16, Marry Cris Amad, 20, and Sandy Amad, 15. All five were students and residents of the local area.

According to initial reports, the teenagers were out harvesting bananas in the mountains to sell at the local market to raise funds for their school’s intramural activities. While carrying out their tasks, they were struck by lightning during an afternoon thunderstorm.

Local authorities were alerted by the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) shortly after the incident. Emergency responders rushed the victims to the nearest health facility, but sadly, three of them were pronounced dead on arrival at the Rural Health Unit. The other two victims were transferred to a hospital in Pagadian City, where they are currently receiving treatment.

The community is mourning the loss of these young lives, with local officials urging residents to take extra precautions during severe weather conditions, especially when outdoors in open areas.

Authorities are conducting further investigations into the incident, while the families of the victims receive support and assistance from local government agencies.
