Davao City, October 19, 2024 — A steel bridge located at Km 8, Iñigo Village, Matina Pangi, Davao City, collapsed yesterday afternoon after a large truck carrying sand attempted to cross. The incident occurred around 2 PM, prompting an immediate closure of the bridge to all vehicles.
According to reports, the truck was traveling along Matina Pangi Road after coming from Carlos Garcia Highway. As it approached the steel bridge, which has a capacity of only five tons, the structure gave way, sending the truck crashing into the river below. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the truck sustained significant damage.
Eyewitnesses mentioned that the driver of the truck fled the scene immediately after the accident. Authorities have cordoned off the area and are conducting investigation to determine whether the collapse was due to the overloading of the truck or possible structural issues with the bridge.
The bridge, which serves as a critical route in Purok 6-A Iñigo, Matina Pangi, has been closed indefinitely while officials assess the damage and plan repairs. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes while the investigation is underway.
Local officials have reassured the public that a thorough inspection will be carried out to determine if the bridge had structural deficiencies or if the collapse was solely due to the heavy load.
No other damages or injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
