MILF Battalion Commander Arrested in Firearms Buy-Bust Operation in Marawi City

MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur – The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Regional Field Unit Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (RFU BAR) arrested a commander of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) during a firearms buy-bust operation inside the Mindanao State University (MSU) Compound, Barangay Cadayonan II, Marawi City, on Monday.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) identified the suspect as alias “Ariong”, allegedly the Base Commander of the 125th Base Command, Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces (BIAF) of the MILF, stationed in Cadayonan, Marawi City.

The suspect was apprehended in the act of selling illegal firearms to undercover CIDG operatives. Confiscated from his possession were the following:

  • One (1) unit M16 A1 rifle
  • One (1) unit Caliber .45 pistol
  • Four (4) M16 A1 rifle magazines
  • Two (2) plastic magazines for M16 A1
  • Two (2) steel magazines for Caliber .45 pistol
  • One hundred (100) rounds of ammunition for M16 A1 rifle
  • One (1) bandolier
  • Six (6) identification cards belonging to the suspect

Following the operation, the suspect was immediately taken into custody by CIDG RFU BAR Lanao del Sur. He is now facing charges for violating Republic Act 10591, also known as the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.

The arrest of the MILF commander highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat the illegal arms trade in the region, contributing to maintaining peace and order in Mindanao.
