Philippine Army’s Major Floren Herrera to Receive Prestigious Nininger Award for Valor at Arms

MANILA, Philippines – Major Floren Herrera of the Philippine Army has been selected to receive the esteemed 2024 Alexander R. Nininger Award for Valor at Arms, in recognition of his extraordinary bravery during the 2017 Battle of Marawi. The award, presented by the West Point Association of Graduates, will be given at a ceremony in West Point, New York, on October 10, 2024.

Major Herrera, a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy Class of 2013, was chosen for this honor due to his exceptional leadership as the executive officer of the 2nd Scout Ranger Company, during the months-long battle against terrorist forces in Marawi from June to October 2017. His heroic actions were instrumental in turning the tide of the battle, one of the most intense urban warfare operations in recent Philippine history.

During the conflict, then-1st Lt. Herrera led his platoon in a daring maneuver across a 50-meter open area, successfully seizing a strategically critical building. This bold action allowed his unit to launch a surprise ambush against enemy forces, inflicting heavy losses on the terrorists while safeguarding the lives of his soldiers.

The Alexander R. Nininger Award, named in honor of Lieutenant Alexander R. “Sandy” Nininger Jr., commemorates the first Medal of Honor recipient of World War II. Nininger was honored posthumously for his valor during the Japanese invasion of Bataan in 1942, where he sacrificed his life to repel enemy forces. The award is bestowed annually upon a graduate of West Point who has demonstrated exceptional heroism in combat, serving as a role model for all cadets.

Major Herrera’s recognition highlights not only his personal courage but also the professionalism and capability of the Philippine Army in its fight against terrorism. His actions during the Battle of Marawi underscore the critical role the military played in liberating the city and restoring peace to the region.

The award ceremony at West Point will be a moment of pride for both the Philippine Army and Major Herrera, as his valor will be recognized on the international stage. His story serves as an inspiration to soldiers worldwide, showcasing the bravery and selflessness required to protect lives and uphold peace in the face of danger.
