Maitum, Sarangani Province, October 27, 2024 – In a significant development in the ongoing efforts to promote peace and security in the region, a former member of a Communist Terrorist Group (CTG) voluntarily surrendered to the authorities on October 26, 2024. The surrender took place in Barangay Zion, Maitum, Sarangani Province, facilitated by the collaborative efforts of local police and military units.
The individual, identified as alias “Ong,” is a 39-year-old farmer and resident of Sitio Itis, Barangay New La Union, Maitum. He was previously associated with the DGF MUSA FSMR, a group that operated in the mountainous regions of Maitum, Kiamba, and Maasim in Sarangani Province. His decision to surrender reflects a personal choice to leave behind a life of conflict and contribute to peace in the community.
During the surrender, Ong turned over significant weaponry, including one homemade caliber .38 revolver loaded with seven live ammunition and one hand grenade. The authorities have stated that both the surrendered individual and the weapons are currently under the custody of the 2nd Sarangani Provincial Mobile Force Company (SPMFC) for documentation and processing.
The successful surrender highlights the effective collaboration between the Maitum Municipal Police Station and the 2nd SPMFC, along with other operating units. Local officials emphasize the importance of community support and trust in encouraging former rebels to reintegrate into society peacefully.
As part of the government’s efforts to facilitate the rehabilitation of former combatants, authorities are expected to provide necessary support services to Ong, ensuring his smooth transition back into civilian life.
