Davao Oriental — The Province of Davao Oriental, under the dedicated leadership of Governor Niño Uy, has once again earned national recognition, this time being awarded the prestigious title of Best Tourism-Oriented Local Government Unit (LGU) at the provincial level during the 2024 Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP) Pearl Awards. The award ceremony took place on Thursday, October 10, in Koronadal City, South Cotabato.
This recognition marks the highest among several awards and categories presented during the annual Pearl Awards, which honor outstanding individuals, organizations, and LGUs for their significant contributions to the development and promotion of tourism across the Philippines.
Governor Uy, who personally received the award, celebrated this historic achievement for Davao Oriental—the province’s first-ever victory in the national tourism award, supported by the Department of Tourism.
In his speech, the governor expressed immense joy over winning the grand prize, stating that this recognition reflects the provincial government’s commitment to the right path of tourism development in Davao Oriental.
“This victory is solid proof that our initiatives and programs are making a positive impact on Davao Oriental’s tourism industry. I am grateful for this recognition as it boosts our morale as proud Davaoeños. Let this inspire us to continue working hard for the development of our province,” said Governor Uy.
Governor Uy personally defended the province’s entry in the Best Tourism-Oriented LGU category before a panel of experienced judges. The province’s entry, titled “Strategic Alliances for Sustainable Tourism Development: The Davao Oriental Formula,” stood out among many other submissions from LGUs nationwide, surpassing runners-up Ilocos Norte and Misamis Oriental.
Despite facing budgetary challenges this year, the Provincial Government of Davao Oriental, under Governor Uy’s leadership and through the Provincial Tourism Office, remains committed to enhancing the tourism sector, which is considered one of the province’s key economic drivers.
Earlier this year, Governor Uy spearheaded the reopening of eco-parks and museums to attract more tourists to the province. He also launched the first-ever Kabilin Festival, a banner event showcasing Davao Oriental’s rich cultural and natural heritage.
The governor also emphasized that greater achievements lie ahead for the province, especially with continued cooperation between the government and its people. “Imagine what more we can accomplish in the coming years, not just for tourism but for the holistic and inclusive development of Davao Oriental. We, in the Provincial Government, alongside our citizens, can undoubtedly do more for our province. I hope we continue to work together for the bright future of Davao Oriental,” he added.
Governor Uy remains firmly committed to advancing programs that benefit the people of Davao Oriental, ensuring that the community reaps the rewards of their collective efforts.
