Davao City, Philippines — The 38th Kadayawan Festival, one of the most anticipated cultural events in the country, has been recognized as the Best Cultural Festival (Highly Urbanized Cities) at the 2024 Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP) Pearl Awards. This prestigious accolade was awarded during the 25th ATOP National Convention held on October 10, 2024, in South Cotabato.
The Kadayawan Festival, celebrated every August, honors Davao City’s rich cultural heritage and the unity of its 11 ethnolinguistic groups, including the Bagobo, Mandaya, Ata, Matigsalug, and Manobo tribes. The festival is a vibrant expression of gratitude for the city’s bountiful harvest and a celebration of the harmonious relationship between its people and nature.
The ATOP Pearl Awards recognize outstanding contributions to the tourism industry, celebrating individuals, organizations, and local government units that have excelled in promoting local culture and tourism. Davao City’s success in receiving this award underscores the city’s commitment to preserving and showcasing its diverse cultural heritage, while also promoting tourism growth and inclusivity.
The Kadayawan Festival is renowned for its spectacular events, including the Indak-Indak sa Kadayawan, a street dance competition featuring colorful performances by local tribes, and the Pamulak sa Kadayawan, a floral float parade showcasing the region’s natural beauty and agricultural abundance. These events, along with food fairs, art exhibits, and musical performances, draw thousands of visitors each year, contributing to the city’s tourism and economic growth.
Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte expressed gratitude to the people of Davao, especially the indigenous communities who are central to the festival’s success. “Daghang salamat Dabawenyos, sa atong 11 ethnolinguistic groups, ug sa tanang nahimong kabahin sa selebrasyon sa atong Kadayawan Festival,” he said, highlighting the collective efforts that have made Kadayawan a model for other cultural festivals in the country.
