Zamboanga City, Philippines – Today marks the 11th anniversary of the Zamboanga Siege, a tragic event that forever changed the lives of the people of Zamboanga City. The Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO), led by PCOL Kimberly E. Molitas, joined local government officials and other security sectors in a solemn commemoration to honor the sacrifices made during this dark chapter in the city’s history.
The Zamboanga Siege, which began in the early hours of September 9, 2013, lasted for 21 harrowing days. It claimed the lives of 38 individuals, including twenty soldiers, five policemen, and thirteen civilians. The siege not only resulted in the loss of lives but also led to the destruction of homes and a significant disruption to the daily lives of the city’s residents.
The memorial ceremony was held at the Freedom Fighters Memorial Shrine Plaza, where a wreath-laying, a 21-gun salute, and Institutional Recognition were conducted to pay tribute to the fallen heroes who valiantly defended the city. This event served as a poignant reminder of the resilience and bravery of those who endured the siege and the ultimate sacrifices they made.
PCOL Molitas emphasized the importance of remembering the sacrifices made by the city’s defenders. “This day serves as a reminder of the horrifying effects of the siege, but more importantly, it highlights the heroism and sacrifices made by our police officers and military counterparts in maintaining peace and order in the city,” she said.
The ZCPO, in collaboration with the local government unit (LGU) and other security groups, remains steadfast in its commitment to preventing such terror from ever happening again. Continuous efforts are being made to ensure the safety and security of the people of Zamboanga.
As we honor the memory of those who sacrificed their lives, let us be inspired by their legacy of bravery and resilience. The Zamboanga Siege is a testament to the strength and unity of the Zamboangueños, and it is our collective duty to work towards a safer and more secure future for all.
This day not only commemorates the tragic events of the past but also serves as a beacon of hope and a call to action for the present and future. Let us remember the sacrifices made and strive to uphold the peace and order that so many fought to protect.
