Marawi City, Lanao del Sur — April 11, 2025 — The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) has successfully concluded a three-day 10-Year Solid Waste Management (SWM) Writeshop held at M-Bistro Pangao Saduc in Marawi City from April 9 to 11. This significant event marked a proactive step toward strengthening sustainable waste management practices across the province.

Organized with the support of the Lanao del Sur Provincial Government, under the leadership of Governor Dr. Mamintal “Bombit” Alonto Adiong Jr. and Vice Governor Mohammad Khalid “Mujam” Raki-in Adiong, the writeshop convened a diverse group of stakeholders to revisit, refine, and realign the province’s 10-year SWM plans.

Led by PENRO under Forester Pili Papandayan, the activity brought together representatives from local government units, Civil Society Organizations (such as MARADECA), the Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO), the Local Economic Development and Investment Promotion Office (LEDIPO), and the Provincial Legal Service Office (PLSO). Together, they worked to ensure that the revised plans meet both national regulatory standards and the unique environmental and social context of Lanao del Sur.

Participants shared insights, tackled existing waste management challenges, and celebrated key milestones in the province’s ongoing efforts toward environmental sustainability. The collaborative atmosphere of the writeshop underscored the shared responsibility of communities, institutions, and government in building a cleaner and healthier environment.

Solid waste management is a pressing concern in many parts of the Philippines. Improper waste disposal contributes to pollution, health hazards, and the degradation of natural resources. A comprehensive and well-executed SWM plan helps mitigate these problems by promoting waste reduction, segregation, recycling, and proper disposal systems.

Having a 10-year plan provides LGUs with a clear roadmap — not only for managing waste but also for educating the public, mobilizing resources, and adapting to new environmental policies. It ensures accountability and encourages long-term solutions that contribute to climate resilience and public health.

The writeshop participants reaffirmed their commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development. Their collaborative effort serves as a model for other provinces looking to elevate their solid waste management strategies.

As Lanao del Sur moves forward with an updated and unified plan, the province takes a meaningful step closer to a cleaner, greener, and more resilient future.
