TUNGAWAN, Zamboanga Sibugay – The Tungawan Municipal Police Station (MPS), in coordination with the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), conducted a checkpoint operation at the Border Control Point in Barangay San Pedro, Tungawan, on March 17, 2025, at 11:55 PM. The operation was part of ongoing efforts to ensure law enforcement and security during the election period.
During the checkpoint, authorities flagged down a red utility vehicle, a Wagon Adventure with plate number ADY884, driven by a resident of Barangay Tulungatung, Zamboanga City. The vehicle, which was traveling from Barangay Licomo, Zamboanga City, entered the border of Zamboanga Sibugay Province and underwent routine inspection by the Philippine National Police (PNP) personnel.
Upon inspection, officers observed a ream of cigarettes visible through the vehicle’s transparent rear window. When asked for legal documentation for the items, the driver failed to present any, leading authorities to confiscate the goods under the plain view doctrine. An incidental search followed, resulting in the arrest of the driver for illegal possession and transportation of contraband.
Confiscated during the operation were 200 reams of New Berlin (Red) cigarettes, amounting to PHP 229,200 based on the Bureau of Customs’ standard pricing. The smuggled cigarettes, along with the suspect’s vehicle, were seized as evidence.
The arrested individual was informed of his constitutional rights and the provisions of the anti-torture law in a dialect he understood. He was then transported to the Tungawan MPS for proper documentation and legal proceedings.
PCOL Barnard Danie V. Dasugo, Provincial Director of the Zamboanga Sibugay Police Provincial Office, emphasized the importance of such operations, stating, “We remain committed to upholding the law and ensuring the safety and security of the community. This checkpoint operation not only ensures the safety of the election period but is also a testament to the dedication of ZSBPPO to combat illegal activities that threaten the peace and order of the province.”
Authorities have reiterated their vigilance against smuggling and other illicit activities, particularly during the election season, to safeguard public safety and order. Further investigations into the origins and intended recipients of the confiscated goods are ongoing.
