Davao City, Philippines — The Australian Embassy, represented by Economic Counsellor Luke Villiers, reaffirmed its commitment to deepening business and investment partnerships with Mindanao during a courtesy meeting with Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) Chairperson Leo Tereso Magno on January 24, 2025, at the MinDA Office.

The discussions centered on aligning and matching business interests to foster collaborative ventures between Australia and Mindanao. A notable outcome of the meeting was MinDA’s endorsement of the upcoming Investment Forum, organized by the Australian Embassy, scheduled for next month in Manila.

“The forum is expected to provide a platform for discussing various investment opportunities and fostering economic cooperation between Australia and the Philippines,” said Villiers.

Chairperson Magno highlighted MinDA’s recent initiatives, including a groundbreaking partnership with the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Agrarian Reform (MAFAR) and SEAALS Agri-Food Co. Inc. The collaboration focuses on establishing a sustainable livestock development program aimed at positioning BARMM as a leader in the cattle industry and a major producer of halal meat and dairy products. This effort aligns with the Marcos Administration’s strategy to alleviate poverty in BARMM through agricultural development.

The meeting also shed light on Mindanao’s potential for energy investments, particularly in renewable energy projects. MinDA emphasized its goal of achieving a 50% renewable energy mix by 2030, resonating with Australia’s advancements in hybrid renewable energy systems, which integrate storage technologies for sustainability and energy security.

Joining Villiers at the meeting were Second Secretary Lachlan Parsons and Senior Program Officer Mabellene Reynaldo. MinDA’s delegation included Executive Director Janet Lopoz, Investment Promotion Supervisor Anelyn Binancilan, and Technical Staff James Doldolia.

The meeting highlighted the growing synergy between Australia and Mindanao, paving the way for enhanced economic cooperation and mutual growth. By fostering strategic partnerships, both parties aim to unlock greater opportunities for investment and sustainable development in the region.
