Camp Sgt Quintin M Merecido, Buhangin, Davao City – On December 23, 2024, authorities intercepted smuggled cigarettes valued at approximately PhP 5,500,600.00 during a routine inspection at the Task Force Davao checkpoint in Purok 1, Brgy Eden, Toril District, Davao City. Two individuals were arrested in connection with the smuggling operation.
The contraband was discovered when a Canter Elf Van, bearing plate number CBN 7118, was flagged down by the on-duty CAFGU Active Auxiliary II (CAA II) personnel for a routine inspection. During the inspection, the officer noticed reams of suspected smuggled cigarettes in plain view on the back seat of the passenger side. Further examination revealed numerous boxes of smuggled cigarettes inside the vehicle.
When questioned, the driver failed to provide any pertinent documentation for the cargo, prompting the CAA II personnel to detain the suspects. Assistance was immediately sought from Eden Police Station (PS19) of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) and the Bureau of Customs for inventory and proper handling of the confiscated items.
Seized Items:
- 140 boxes of NEW BERLIN brand cigarettes
- Opened reams containing six packs of NEW BERLIN brand cigarettes
- One (1) Canter Elf Van (plate number CBN 7118)
The arrested individuals are currently in the custody of Eden Police Station (PS19), DCPO, as charges for violations of Republic Act 10863, also known as the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act, are being prepared. Meanwhile, the confiscated items have been turned over to the Bureau of Customs for proper disposition.
